Imbricate, reddish brown and wide conical in shape, the 3/16 to ¼" buds are divergent from the stems at a 45 degree angle and have numerous scales producing a highly imbricate pattern. The larger buds may be accompanied by a much smaller accessory bud. Like many other members of the elm family, the buds are off-center from the leaf scars.
