Alternate, simple and narrow ovate to elliptic, the 1 ½ to 3 ½" leaves are singly serrate with 8 to 14 acuminate to apiculate large serrations along each margin. The leaves have a rounded base, acuminate apex and are folded along upward along the midrib with the margins and serrations curved inwards producing a slightly cupped effect. The leaves have very short petioles, often less than 1/8" long.
