Xanthorhiza simplicissima
Yellow-root

Culture: The yellowroot will grow in full sun to moderate shade in acidic soils. It is native in moist to wet shady woodlands, but will tolerate average dry sites as well as flooding.

Chlorosis or leaf yellowing will result if grown on alkaline soils. Otherwise, few problems can be expected.

Usage: This plant is best used in moist shady areas where it forms a dense uniform flat-topped habit. In such places it should be confined by a barrier such as pavement or sturdy edging, else it will continue to slowly spread throughout the bed. In drier areas, it is not aggressive. I have seen it used nicely as a groundcover under the trees or as a foundation plant. Plantings will be more open in shadier sites. The Morton and Arnold Arboreta along with Bernheim Forest and Arboretum have nice plantings.
