Wisteria macrostachya
Kentucky wisteria

Culture: This very adaptable species prefers well-drained, moist soils but it tolerates from wet to average dry sites with a slightly acid to slightly alkaline pH, and full sun to shade, although flowering will be improved with more light. It is fast-growing but considered difficult to transplant.

There are several disease or insect problems with this species, but almost all are insignificant.

Usage: This cold-hardy wisteria makes an excellent addition to the northern garden, gracing the summer months with its sweetly perfumed flowers. It is probably most effective growing over an arbor or pergola. It can also be used in an unsupported shrub form. While most of the cultivars have blue flowers, 'Clara Mack' is known for its white flowers displayed in longer racemes.
