| Wisteria floribunda Japanese wisteriaViolet to lavender-violet and very showy, the pendulous racemes of perfect flowers are 8 to 20" long, fragrant, and borne in late April to early May. Some cultivated selections can produce racemes in excess of 4' long! Individual flowers are about 5/8 to ¾" across. In this species, the flowers at the base of the raceme open first and the opening gradually progresses toward the apex. In contrast, the flowers of Wisteria sinensis open nearly all at the same time. The flowers are mostly produced on "old wood", stems produced the previous season. Cultivars with white and pink flowers are also commonly available. See the culture section for tips on maximizing flower production. |
