The 4-sided ½ to ¾" flower buds are somewhat bulbous towards the short acuminate apex and are mottled gray-green turning reddish brown in color and slightly pubescent. The similarly colored valvate vegetative buds are ¼ to 1/3" long, 4-sided and slightly pubescent.
