The large deciduous leaves are obovate, oblong-obovate or elliptic with a coarsely dentate to crenate-serrate margin. The apices of the 3 to 6" leaves are acute and the bases are broad cuneate to rounded. The upper surface of the leathery leaves is highly glossy with 7 to 10 pairs of impressed veins while the underside is pale and glabrous except for some fine hairs on the veins. The bright to deep green leaves have the odor of green peppers when crushed.
