Viburnum rhytidophyllum
Leatherleaf viburnum

Culture: This viburnum prefers moist well drained soils in shady sites. This viburnum is easy to transplant and is best located in partial shade but tolerates heavy shade. The key to successful culture is placement in an area that is protected from wind and full sunlight in the summer and winter.

Generally free from serious insects or diseases, but under stress borers can become a problem.

Usage: The Leatherleaf viburnum is occasionally used as a specimen but more frequently is used in the back of the shrub border where its dark evergreen leaves can make a nice backdrop for smaller brightly colored shrubs such as rhododendrons. It is also attractive in masses and with other broadleaf evergreens. If necessary, this shrub can be rejuvenated by pruning to the ground. Leaf scorch is possible in colder zones, causing premature leaf fall. Relatively few cultivars are available.
