Viburnum prunifolium
Blackhaw viburnum

Both the vegetative and flower buds are valvate, purplish gray and 1/3 to ½" long. The flower buds are borne terminally and are bulbous at the base with a short acuminate apex whereas the vegetative buds are long slowly tapering to the apex. The buds on this species are distinctly shorter than those of Viburnum lentago.
