| Viburnum opulus
European cranberrybush viburnum[ITALIC] Broad ovate and 3 to sometimes 5-lobed, the opposite simple leaves are dark green and 2-4" long with coarsely toothed margins. The glabrous leaves have a rounded to truncate base with acuminate apices. They closely resemble those of Viburnum trilobum with the lobes being slightly shorter on this species and more frequently toothed. A small but useful distinguishing feature is the disk-like concave glands that appear on the petiole, which is also narrowly grooved. The glands are borne on the petiole adjacent to leaf base and are not to be confused with the string-like stipules borne on the base of the petiole early in the season. In contrast the glands of Viburnum trilobum are slender and convex. |
