One of the easiest viburnums to identify in winter due to their terminal 1"-long valvate flower buds that are bulbous at the base tapering to a long point and lead gray in color. The flower buds may appear split at their base. The similarly colored valvate vegetative buds range in length from ¾ to 1" if borne terminally to ½" or less if borne laterally. The lateral buds are sometimes misshapen. The long and distinctly bulbous flower buds of this species are longer than those of Viburnum prunifolium.
