Viburnum cassinoides
Witherod viburnum

The flower buds are up to 1" long and valvate with a bulbous base and a long tapering apex. The scales at the bulbous base may split to reveal lighter colored inner scales. The vegetative buds are also valvate and ½ to 1" in length without the bulbous base. Lateral buds are typically appressed. Although the buds resemble those of Viburnum lentago, the buds on this species are yellow-brown to reddish brown in color in contrast to the purplish gray of the nannyberry viburnum.
