Western redcedarScale-like and borne in flattened branchlets that are displayed horizontally, the leaves occur in two types. Those along the main axis are up ¼" long and bear a raised gland. The lateral branchlets bear shorter 1/8" leaves that are borne in an alternating 2-ranked condition giving a 4-ranked appearance. The short 1/8" leaves are closely overlapping and lack the raised glands of those that occur along the main axis. Both types of leaves are typically a darker green, glossier and less flattened than those of Thuja occidentalis. The leaves give off a sweet tansy-like odor when crushed. |
