Sassafras albidum
Common sassafras

The ovoid, terminal buds are borne singly and are 2/5" long, whereas the lateral buds are small and divergent. Initially green with a hint of red at the tip, buds gradually take on a reddish cast on the side exposed to sunlight over the course of the winter. Winter buds usually have a slight grayish tip.
