Rhus copallina

Rhus copallina
Flame sumac

Culture: This native species is well suited to large, dry and rocky sites. Because of its suckering habit it should be used with care lest your neighbors find themselves with numerous suckers arising in their lawns. In moist fertile sites, the continuous production of suckers can make it difficult to control. It should be grown in full sun with slightly acidic to neutral soils.

Although somewhat weak wooded, this species easily renews itself from new suckers. I have observed some young stem dieback following winters in Illinois.

Usage: The Flameleaf sumac makes an interesting specimen in the shrub border, or forms a large mass as a specimen. It will also be quite happy as a large bank cover.
