Rhus chinensis
Chinese sumac

Culture: Although fairly tough and durable, usage of this shrub in northern climates is limited by its lack of greater cold hardiness. It prefers large open and sunny sites. As this plant matures, it begins to send up suckers from around the base and even 15-20' from the base. Care should be exercised in locating this species, as it will want to take over.

Few problems seem to bother this species other than lack of cold hardiness in the North.

Usage: The Chinese sumac can be effectively used in the background of larger borders, as a specimen or in masses. Consider the ability of this plant to spread before planting it too close to your neighbor's property or other shrub beds.
