Pin oakAlternate, simple and broad elliptic, the 3 to 6" leaves have 5 to 7 bristle-tipped lobes with deep "U"-shaped sinuses between the lobes. The leaves are dark glossy green above and pale green below with tufts of tan-colored hairs where the veins meet. Although the "U"-shaped sinuses can help to distinguish the leaves of this species from the "C"-shaped sinuses of Quercus coccinea, both species will display some of each. Therefore look for the relatively greater number of "U"-shaped sinuses on this species. |
