Quercus muehlenbergii
Chinquapin oak

The imbricate and ovate buds are brown to grayish brown, slightly sharp pointed and are 3/16 to 1/4" long. Showing a very obvious imbrication pattern, the tips of the scales are light grayish tan, contrasting with the darker brown lower portion of each scale. These gray-brown buds are shorter and more blunt than the strongly yellowish brown buds of Quercus prinus.
