Paulownia tomentosa
Royal paulownia

The unusual flowers of this species are lavender in color, 2" long and emit a vanilla-like fragrance. The flower petals are fused into a funnel-like corolla with 5 rounded lobes at the apex. The flowers are borne in 8-12" long panicles in April. Unfortunately, they are not winter hardy throughout most of the Midwest, so the plant is often grown for its foliage in marginal regions.
