Nyssa sylvatica
Black gum, Black tupelo

The slender reddish-brown young stems become light gray with time and have sparcely borne gray-tan lenticels. The smooth stems have leaf scars with 3 sunken vascular bundle traces that form "cavern-like entrances." The bundle traces become more apparent in winter as they turn brown and dry.
