Liquidambar styraciflua
American sweetgum

Persisting through the winter months, the fruit is a 1 - 1 1/2" diameter syncarp of dehiscent capsules. The capsules are green in the first season and turn brown as capsules dry to release their seeds. The prolifically produced fruits drop over a long period of time and are objectionable. Having made fun of the numerous crafts that make use of these fruits, I have received a few "ornaments" from my students for the holidays!
