Liquidambar styraciflua
American sweetgum

Broad ovate and shiny, the 1/4 - 1/2" terminal buds are imbricate and slightly sharp pointed. They are shiny and green when first formed, becoming reddish-brown but remaining glossy, as the season progresses, and emit a fragrance when crushed. Lateral buds are narrower and diverge from the stem.
