Lindera benzoin
Spicebush

Culture: This species is moderately difficult to transplant and slow to establish. It performs best in moist well drained acidic to neutral soils in full sun to moderate shade. If plants are to perform well in full sun, soils must be kept moist. Plants grown in shade are more open and loose in habit, but still quite attractive.

This species is generally free from serious disease and insect problems. Culture of this species is easy, assuming adequate moisture is provided.

Usage: This species is well suited for use in naturalized situations and in the back of a shrub border. In its native habitats, it occurs as an understory species in moist forested sites with Acer saccharum, Fagus grandifolia and Quercus rubra. Its tolerance of shade is a useful feature in the landscape.
