Larix decidua
European larch

Culture: This species prefers moist, well drained, porous soils on sunny sites but will grow in wet, boggy conditions. It does not tolerate shade, dry shallow soils or polluted conditions. Transplanting readily, this species is a medium to fast growing tree. It should be pruned in mid-summer. The species is rather choosy about its environment, and will not be happy if there is not adequate moisture.

Two serious insect pests are the larch casebearer and the larch sawfly; cankers, needle rusts and wood decay can also be serious disease problems. Despite these problems, most gardeners will only likely encounter occasional problems with the casebearer.

Usage: Effective in parks and other large areas as a screen or specimen, the European larch's soft texture helps to cut harsh lines and also adds a naturalizing effect to the landscape.
