Lagerstroemia indica
Crepe myrtle

This species is worthwhile growing for the bark effects alone. The attractive exfoliating bark most often becomes a smooth, patchy, multi-colored mix of off-white, various shades of gray, and tan. The bark can also be a vivid rusty brown superimposed with gray. The bark character will vary with the cultivar. Fortunately most mature trees have little foliage close to the ground, allowing the bark to be seen.
