The moderately thick mature first year stems are green in color and sparsely covered with short brown pubescence. The first year stems take on a reddish cast where exposed to sunlight. Second year stems are glossy brown and begin to fissure slightly. Third year stems are more heavily fissured and are a mixture of brown, reddish brown and gray.
