Unlike the large ovate buds of rhododendrons, the flower buds of this species are 1/2 to 3/4" long, near-linear clusters of small ovate buds. The finger-like clusters are green with a reddish cast where most exposed to sunlight. The small brown 1/16" brown pubescent vegetative buds are hidden by the petioles of attached leaves and slightly embedded in the stem just above the raised leaf scars.
