Kalmia latifolia

Kalmia latifolia
Mountain kalmia

Glossy and dark green, the alternate, simple and elliptic leaves are 2-4" in length with entire margins. The thick and stiff leaves are often folded along the midrib and have acute to slightly acuminate apices and acute to nearly cuneate bases. The dark green mature leaves contrast nicely with the yellowish-purple emerging new leaves. Leaf surfaces tend to be less glossy when grown in marginal hardiness areas or if the cultural conditions are less than optimum.
