The young stems are reddish brown with raised small gray lenticels. An onion-skin appearance often occurs on young stems. In the second year, the stems turn grayish brown. From a distance the stems are distinctly darker and more brown than the light gray stems of Ilex decidua. The branch tips are often enlarged or swollen.
