Ilex opaca
American holly

Most older plants have fairly dull evergreen leaves that are alternate and elliptic, thick, and stiff, with 3-4 (up to 6 possible) spiny teeth per side. They range from 1 1/2" to 3 1/2" long, and have yellow-green undersides. Newer selections have increasingly glossy foliage.
