Hamamelis vernalis
Vernal witchhazel

The flowers are small with strap-like petals, yellow to orange-red with red at the base. Each petal is 1/2" long and they curl up on cold days or nights. This is the first shrub to bloom in late winter or early spring, lasting for 3-4 weeks. The beginning of its flowering period ranges from January to March, depending upon weather and location.
