Cotinus obovatus
American smoketree

Culture: The American Smoketree is equally adaptable as the Common Smoketree. It is tolerates dry and either acid or alkaline soils. It prefers full sun or partial shade. This species was collected nearly to extinction during the Civil War period as a source of orange dye.

This species is generally free from serious insect and disease problems.

Usage: Usually restricted to specimen status because of its large bold showy inflorescence.
