Cornus kousa
Kousa dogwood

Showy white acuminate bracts appear in mid-June, about 2-3 weeks after Cornus florida and may last up to 6 weeks. Differing from Cornus florida, the bracts are acuminate at the apex rather than notched. The fertile flowers are yellow to greenish white and are not showy. Held uniformly above the foliage, the flowers accentuate the horizontal branching pattern of the plant. The white bracts take on a pink blush as they age. The search continues for plants with increasing bright pink or red bracts. The variety chinensis is even more floriferous than the species.
