Young stems are gray-brown, pubescent becoming glabrous and developing deep fissures in the second year. The distinctive fissuring pattern on the stem us a key identification feature. Short, fat and borne from 1-3 in number, the 1" long by 1/8 - 3/16" diameter male catkins are present on the stems in the winter.
