Cornus alternifolia
Pagoda dogwood

Vegetative buds are very small and minutely hairy. The more noticeable flower buds are imbricate with a valvate tendency, 1/4" long and shiny and purplish with a small bit of pubescence at the apex. The reddish purple color of the buds matches the stem color very closely, a useful identification feature.
