Celastrus scandens
American bittersweet

Culture: This species is very adaptable and tolerant of poor sites. It should be sited in full sun for best fruiting. Avoid placing it too close to other plant material to avoid their being engulfed and having their stems girdled by the bittersweet.

Usage: The American bittersweet is typically cultivated by gardeners wanting to enjoy the fall display of fruit capsules. Because it is a twining vine, it requires a fence or trellis for support. The support should be sturdy to accommodate the weight of the plant. It can be nicely grown on an open fence and can also serve to cover rock piles.
