Shagbark hickory

Greenish brown turning gray-brown, the pubescent and imbricate buds are ovate with loosely overlapping and recurved outer scales and a blunt apex. Terminal buds are 1/2 to 1" long while lateral buds are 1/4" in length. Buds are nearly identical to those of Carya laciniosa.
