Carya laciniosa
Shellbark hickory

Culture: Native to wet bottomlands, the shellbark hickory prefers to inhabit extremely moist soils, even those with standing water.

Usage: Like Carya ovata, this is an excellent source of wildlife food and shelter, and thus makes it a welcome addition to any type of habitat restoration. The droppage of mature nuts may be objectionable in highly manicured areas. If you can bear the nut litter, this is a worthwhile shade tree. For the adventuresome gardener with a lot of space, this tree provides an abundance of sweet, edible nuts that will prove to be more than adequate for most any "nutty" gardener and their "squirrelly friends".
