Carya laciniosa
Shellbark hickory

Ovate, imbricate and greenish brown turning gray-brown, the pubescent buds of this species are 3/4 to 1" long at the terminal and less than one-half that long laterally. The buds are broadly ovate with a blunt apex and have only a few overlapping scales that are loose or recurved at the tips. This species and Carya ovata have nearly identical winter buds.
