Betula pendula

Betula pendula
European white birch

Culture: The culture is similar to other birches, preferring cool moist soils, neutral pH and adequate soil nutrients. Birches transplant best in the spring and should only be pruned in the fall, due to bleeding when spring pruned.

This species has intense problems with the bronze birch borer, often succumbing readily in warmer climates. As a result, this species should be viewed as short-lived.

Usage: Although the dark glossy green leaves, smooth white bark and graceful pendulous branching make this tree a handsome specimen, it is extremely short-lived due to borer infestations. Consequently, it is probably best left unused for any long-term designs.
