Betula lenta
Sweet birch, Cherry birch

Slender and shiny reddish brown, the slender stems emit a pleasant wintergreen flavor and odor, giving the species its common name. The fragrance is an excellent identification feature. Each short bud spur typically produces 2 leaves. Reddish brown male catkins, usually 2-4 in number, are present on the ends of the stems all winter.
