| Aronia melanocarpa Black chokeberryCulture: Black Chokeberry is found natively in bogs, on prairies and dunes. It is adaptable to wet and dry sites as well as full sun to shady sites. It is also easily transplanted and easy to grow. Leaf spot, rust and apple borer may occur but are rarely a problem. Rabbits like to feed on the shoots of young plants and have on occasion mowed some of my plantings completely off. Usage: This suckering shrub looks best when used in mass. Its suckering nature makes it useful in bank plantings where it helps to stabilize the soil. A large planting at the Chicago Botanic Gardens, near a pond, looks great throughout the year. It has shiny green foliage with a subtle white flower display in spring, good red fall color and clusters of shiny black fruit that are surprisingly showy through mid winter. The cultivar 'Elata' is taller with fewer suckers and larger fruit. |
