Aronia melanocarpa
Black chokeberry

Imbricate, conical and flattened, the 1/4" to 1/2 long, green buds gradually turn pale red and then darken to a deep reddish black. The two-ranked distribution of scales produces a flattened appearance. The buds may also have somewhat of a hook at the end. As compared to A. arbutifolia, the buds of this species are darker in color.
