Imbricate, pinkish red and 1/4 to 3/8" long, the narrow conical buds bear their scales in two-ranks. Although similar in appearance to those of the genus Amelanchier, the two-ranked condition and lack of hairs fringing the scales will distinguish this species. The two-ranked condition of the bud scales makes them appear somewhat flattened from the sides.
